Glove and Marriage – Alfredo Meli planning post-wedding title assault

In what was the fight of the night, Alfredo Meli [13(3)-0-1] made his Belfast homecoming yesterday at the Devenish.

The Ballymurphy middle opened the inaugural Ginley Promotions bill – ‘Dust Up at the Devenish’ – and scored an entertaining six-round points win over game Hungarian Laszlo Fazekas.

The Belfast man showed an impressive range of shots in what was his first fight in his home city since his draw with Conrad Cummings for the BBBoC Celtic title back in November 2015.

Meli, now managed by MTK, was happy with his return and said afterwards that “I was glad to back to the home ground and it was good to get another win under the belt.

“I was practicing things, trying them out, no better time than tonight. He’s been in against some good people.”

The Immaculata southpaw will now take a short break from boxing, returning in the Summer, as he is duee to get married next month.

“I’ll be taking a wee break, I’ll keep training, but I’ll be taking a wee break from fighting,” he explained.

When he returns, Meli is intent on chasing titles, and stated that “I’ll fight for any of them [titles].”

Giving his thoughts on the mooted Irish title fight between Luke Keeler and Darren Cruise, he noted that “one of them [Cruise] is at a heavier weight!”

“I’d fight either. I’ve done a bit of sparring with Luke and it was good sparring, he helped me for the Cummings fight.”
