Geraghty v McVarnock Irish title fight in the pipeline

The Boxing Union of Ireland have this morning announced that they have authorised an Irish super featherweight title bout between Declan Geraghty and Ciaran McVarnock.

The two fighters have both been hoping for a step up in recent times and it looks like they will now face off against each other. Both will need to first compete in scheduled eight rounders to enable the bout, for which Dublin is said to be the preferred location.

Dubliner Geraghty [12(3)-0-1] fights in Glasgow this weekend on an MGM Scotland show shown live on Boxnation. Pretty Boy will gain title eligibility with an eight-rounder against former French title challenger Dame Seck [10(1)-13(2)-2].

McVarnock [6(1)-0-1] was due to face fellow unbeaten Warren fighter Raza Hamza over eight rounds on Monday October 24th, however this fight is in doubt now with the Belfast man in line for another big fight with Geraghty. Be it against Hamza or otherwise, McVarnock is hoping to fight an eight rounder to gain title eligibility as soon as possible.

The Dublin v Belfast match-up is a classic clash of styles between slick southpaw Geraghty and the relentless pressure of the Arnie Farnell-trained McVarnock

The Irish super featherweight title was last held by Belfast’s James Tennyson, who knocked out Mickey Coveney in the second round of their bout at St Kevin’s Hall back in 2013. The other past holders of the 130lbs green belt were Coveney, Eddie Hyland, Anto Cacace, and Pat Dohery.
