Ger Healy ready to “do it the hard way” again ahead of tricky comeback rematch
With a record that currently stands at 5(0)-4(1)-1, it’s obvious that Gerard Healy hasn’t had it all his own way in the professional ring – but that’s just the way he likes it.
Dee Walsh, Liam Smith, John Hutchinson, and Willie Warburton have all grabbed wins over the Belfast light middleweight, but he hopes to kickstart his career on Saturday night against one of these conquerors – while another shouts instructions from the corner.
After almost two years out, Healy will return on the inaugural Kieran Farrell Promotions Belfast card at The Devenish Complex where he will take on Warburton in a four round rematch. What’s more is, Walsh and fellow former pro Ray Ginley will be in Healy’s corner for the comeback contest.
As many have found out to their detriment, underestimate Willie Warburton [23(4)-110(2)-9] at your peril. Possibly the most skilfull journeyman on the circuit, Warburton has upset a number of prospects and contenders over the years.
Recalling their 2012 Ulster Hall meeting, where Warburton triumphed 39:37 on the cards, Healy explained to Irish-Boxing.com how “looking back at the last fight, my head wasn’t right, but I’m not taking anything away from Willie he’s a good fighter.”
It’s a tricky comeback, but the 33 year old jokes how “it’s a hard fight but, as you well know, Gerard Healy does it the hard way!”
“It’s brilliant to be back, it was that I just had family things sort out.”
Healy is now training at Immanuel Boxing Academy under Walsh and Ginley and he is enjoying having a familiar team.
The Ulsterman described how “it’s great there. Two good friends and they know me inside out.”
“I’m hoping to put on a great show of boxing – but a win is a win at the of the day, especially against a tough fighter.”
The ‘A New Era’ bill is topped by an eight-round clash between Feargal McCrory and Jay Carney, with undercard support from Mike Perez, Sean McGlinchey, Mathew Fitzsimons, Sean Magee, Mark Morris, Sean Higginson, and Ronnie Clark.
