“Generous” Tyrone McKenna willing to offer Ohara Davies opportunity

‘Generous’ Tyrone McKenna [17(6)-1(0)-1] claims he will give Ohara Davies the chance to gain relevance again by taking on the controversial Londoner next.

When Davies, who has lost his two highest-profile fights to Jack Catterall and Josh Taylor, was flying high as a Matchroom fighter he was the first name on a massive call out list for the Belfast light welter.

McKenna claims the boxing boot is now on the other foot and ‘Two Tanks’ needs him to try and make himself relevant again.

“Being a generous man” the ‘Mighty Celt’ claims he will offer a helping hand to his managerial stablemate by calling him out and offering to fight him.

Indeed, the rangy southpaw says that the abrasive Davies [18(14)-2(1)] is the only name left on a call-out list that was once regarded the longest in Irish boxing.

“I just want Ohara Davies,” declared McKenna.

“Now more than ever, I’m more relevant to him. I’ll give him the platform. He had a stinker in his last fight and he’s as irrelevant as he’s ever been.”

“Me calling him out will raise his profile. It’s gone topsy-turvy but I’m a generous man!”

McKenna was speaking after he was officially confirmed for the undercard of Luke Keeler’s rematch with Conrad Cummings at the Ulster Hall in Belfast on Friday March 29th.

The 28-year-old, who beat Lewis Benson in Glasgow last time out, joins Steven Ward, Gary Cully, Tyrone McCullagh, Padraig McCrory, Taylor McGoldrick, Sean McComb, Steven Donnelly and Callum Bradley on the YouTube-streamed bill and he is excited to be fighting at the iconic venue.

McKenna recalled how “I fought in Ulster Hall once as an amateur. I’ve fought in some great places like the SSE Arena but here, the crowd is on top of you and it’ll be a great, great atmosphere. The main event was a great fight the first time and can be even better second time around.”

McKenna was in something of a gruelling contest with Benson last time out, but claims he is feeling fit after a break and is raring to go for 2019.

“I have nasty cuts and bruises after every fight but I’ve healed perfectly again. I came into camp reasonably fit and I’m excited to be back in camp after a nice break with the kids at Christmas. I’m already training hard and eating healthy.”
