Spike O’Sullivan to fight Canelo in September

Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan [27(19)-2(1)] will fight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in 2018.

There have been rumours that if the pair emerge victorious from their respective May 4th and 5th Las Vegas fights they would trade leather later in the year.

However, regardless of whether or not Canelo wins his massive middleweight clash with Gennady Golovkin on May 5th the Golden Boy duo will meet in September.

Irish-Boxing.com believe a Golovkin win in the eagerly anticipated clash would mean ‘Spike’ would provide comeback opposition for Alvarez in Vegas.

However, if the Mexican defeats the Kazakh, he will put three middleweight World titles on the line against the former Irish champion in a Texas stadium fight four months later.

GGG fan Spike will be up for Canelo in the May 5 rematch so he can challenge for three World titles in September.

The Cork 33-year-old had previously stated his desire to fight the Mexican megastar, and has now claimed that a plan is in place that will see him face Canelo later this year.

“The fight I’m looking at is Canelo after May 4th so I hope that Canelo obviously beats Golovkin. I’m going to fight him regardless but it’s much better for me if he wins,” Spike told World Boxing News.

“I’m looking forward to it you know, I’m very excited about it for that fight I believe I’m possibly the hardest puncher in the whole division. If Canelo beats Golovkin I’d love the opportunity to knock him out and prove I can mix it with the best in this division,” he added.

Golden Boy have yet to officially confirm the fight – understandably considering both have upcoming bouts – while trainer Paschal Collins would only say that the Celtic Warrior Gym fighter has a first weekend in May fight to focus on.

O’Sullivan reveals that May 4th Vegas clash won’t be against the two names initially put forward David Lemieux or Gabriel Rosado.

“I will have an opponent announced soon and I know it’s not Lemieux and I know it’s not Rosado, it’s neither of those.”

“I’m not sure who I’ll be fighting at the moment but Golden Boy are putting somebody in place and I’m going to fight them on the 4th May in Vegas.”
