Gary Cully set to face unbeaten Welsh prospect for BUI Celtic title

Gary Cully‘s call for an Irish opponent may not have been answered but the Kildare starlet is still set to fight for a title next time out.

The Naas lightweight boxes on the BoxNation ‘Raise The Titanic’ show in Belfast at the Titanic Exhibition Centre on Friday October 5th and had revealed that he had been turned down by six of his Irish rivals.

Following this, it was advertised that Cully [5(2)-0] would be instead making his TV debut on the show in a six rounder – which would still be a step-up following five four-rounders in his first year of pro fighting.

However, Irish-Boxing.com understands that the Sarto southpaw will be fighting for the BUI Celtic lightweight title on the card.

Cully is set to face unbeaten Welsh fighter Lance Cooksey [7(1)-0] over eight rounds for the inaugural lightweight belt.

The 28-year-old, who hails from Rhoose just outside of Cardiff, fought tonight in Wales where he scored a career-best win, stopping the experienced Jamie Speight in 54-seconds for his maiden knockout victory.

Prior to this, last month, Cooksey stepped up to six rounds and needed to rebound from a knockdown to outpoint the game Zimbabwean Taka Bembere – who Irish fans may remember from his shock knockout win over Mathew Fitzsimons back in July..

Cooksey, who is a stablemate of the likes of former featherweight world champ Lee Selby under Tony Borg, impressed tonight in Cardiff. Stunning Speight with a short left hook upstairs, he pounced on the two-weight BBBoC Southern Area champion and forced the referee to intervene before the first minute had even passed.

22-year-old Cully last fought in June where he saw a major step-up test versus Zsoltan Szabo fall through and he instead ended up outpointing Nicaraguan journeyman Reynaldo Cajina on the Mick Conlan Homecoming undercard.

This would be Cully’s sixth, of six, pro fight in Belfast.

Cully v Cooksey – if it is made – will join Sean Turner v David Price and Tyrone McCullagh v Josh Kennedy near the top of the bill on a card which also features Sean McComb, Paddy Gallagher, Conrad Cummings, Nathaniel May, Padraig McCrory, Steven Donnelly, Steven Ward, Paddy Gallagher, and Marco McCullough who has seen his clash with Declan Geraghty fall through.
