Gary Cully to continue Irish title chase at Ulster Hall

Feargal McCrory and Karl Kelly will contest the vacant Irish lightweight title at the Ulster Hall on Saturday February 9th and Gary Cully will stake his own claim at the famous venue the following month.

The Naas southpaw has this afternoon been confirmed for the card at the historic Belfast landmark on Friday March 29th and Cully is looking to use his latest fight as a platform for the Irish title.

The former European Youth gold medallist was angered by the sanctioning of the McCrory-Kelly fight, claiming that both had turned him down previously and his management have confirmed that they will send an improved offer to the winner.

22-year-old Cully [7(4)-0] has been keen to fight for the BUI Celtic title as a lead-in to an Irish title fight but was unable to secure an Irish opponent and also saw a fight with unbeaten Welshman Lance Cooksey fall through.

The lilywhite instead made the step up to eight in a non-title fight last month, blasting out Tanzanian Muhammed Kambuluta inside a single round.

Returning on the first Irish MTK show of the year, which is headlined by gym-mate Luke Keeler who rematches Conrad Cummings, Cully admits that “I’m loving being this active because I’m looking to progress quickly.”

“This is a big show and I’m really looking forward to it.”

“I’ve never been to Ulster Hall but I’ve heard it’s going to be a great atmosphere – especially with Cummings vs. Keeler II in there. I’m sure Luke’s Dublin crowd will get behind me too!”

Along with the Irish title, Cully has his mind set on securing a world ranking with a major body in the near future and has called out some bigger names such as IBF European champion Robbie Barrett and WBC International Silver titlist Christian Uruzquieta.

‘The Diva’, though, wants domestic dominance first and outlined how “I’m keen to prove myself and become Irish champion as soon as possible. That’s one of the targets for this year but in general, I want to keep learning and be involved in big fights towards the end of the year.”

The roundage of Cully’s next fight remains to be confirmed although it is assumed and expected to be another eight. Indeed, Cully’s coach, Pete Taylor, claims that his charge will be fighting for a Celtic title on the bill.

The Luke Keeler v Conrad Cummings undercard also features Sean McComb, Steven Donnelly, Padraig McCrory, Taylor McGoldrick, Steven Ward, and debutant Callum Bradley, with more to be announced.
