Gabe Rosado calls out Spike O’Sullivan for fight on GGG-Canelo undercard

Two-time World title challenger Gabriel Rosado [24(14)-11(4)] has called out Cork’s Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan.

The American wants to fight the Celtic Warrior Gym middleweight on the undercard of the massive Gennady Golovkin v Canelo Alvarez rematch.

‘Spike’, who was in the frame to fight Danny Jacobs in New York next month, has already been linked with a fight on the May 5th undercard at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It’s been suggested that Golden Boy, with whom O’Sullivan [27(19)-2(1)] is one fight into a four-fight deal, are keen on putting the Mahon man in with former World champion David Lemieux with a view to putting the winner in with Alarvez further down the line should he overcome Golovkin.

However, another Golden Boy fighter in Rosado is keen to get on the massive show and has challenged ‘Spike’ to try and repeat his breakout Antoine Douglas performance against him.

Speaking at the launch press conference for GGG-Canelo II, Rosado asked “how about me fighting Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan on this card?”

“How about that? That would be great, but we’ll see what happens. I would love to get on this card so, Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan, what’s up?”

“They told me about Gary ‘Spike’ two months ago, but I never heard of him, but look he has a great moustache.”

“I have seen him fight and he beat a green guy on HBO. He looked good and did what he was supposed to do, but let’s see if he can do that against me on this card,” said the Philly native.

O’Sullivan and Rosado had been close to fighting last September in Boston but the Cork 33-year-old ended up defeating upcoming Last Man Standing entrant Nick Quigley in an entertaining slugfest.

Rosado may not be as dangerous as the nuclear-fisted Lemieux, but in terms of profile he wouldn’t be a million miles off. The American has come up short at World level, but has shared the ring with some massive names and is a strong alternative if the Canadian elects against a May return.

The 32-year-old scored a good fourth-round stoppage win over Glen Tapia in October and is currently scheduled to appear on a Golden Boy bill in Puerto Rico next month, however this could surely be changed if a big middleweight fight is needed for the May 5th undercard.
