Fryers: It is about getting another win not local pride

James Fryers doesn’t care if his opponents are from Belfast or Bangladesh.

All Irish derby dust ups have lit up small hall shows of late capturing the imagination of fight fans pre fight and entertaining them come fight night.

For Fryers, however each opponent is the same. His all Belfast clash with Alex Bazza in the Devinish this Saturday night is just another fight he feels he has to win. Local pride hasn’t provided any extra motivation nor has the fact he isn’t pitted against an Eastern European journey man.

Granted Fryers versus Bazza is not Eamonn O’Kane versus Anthony Fitzgerald or Willie Casey versus Marco McCullough, as both are relative fight novices, but Bazza could prove the toughest test of the 21 year old lightweight’s career in what could prove the fight of the night.  But Fryers told Irish-boxing.com his focus is on the win not where his opponent comes from.

“It doesn’t matter to me if I fight someone local or foreign it all boils down to the opponent across the ring on fight night and being victorious. No matter who I am faced with in the opposite side of the ring my aim is to win.”

His focus might be on a pushing his unbeaten record to four fights, but Fryers knows victory isn’t guaranteed.

“I have seen Alex fight before and I respect him a lot,” he added. “He has a great heart and lots of determination. He never gives up so I’m looking forward to the fight. I’m just looking to get another four rounds under my belt.”

Fryers has yet to stop an opponent, but looks as that as a positive, content with racking up the rounds.

He hopes to put on a show come Saturday and wants to be more stylish than powerful.

“I can’t wait to get back into the ring in front of the home fans and I just hope to put on a good performance on and I don’t want to disappoint them. I haven’t got a knock out yet but I think it’s more beneficial to get the rounds in. A KO can be classed as a lucky punch while a boxing lesson can be classed as style. So I will be focusing on speed and boxing. Don’t get me wrong I love body shots and working the peek a boo style but I think I will try to box this fight and get the rounds under my belt, if it comes it comes but I’m not going looking for it.”
