Frank Warren reiterates desire for Selby/Warrington v Frampton

Carl Frampton believes the featherweight world will be his oyster if he beats Nonito Donaire on April 21st, suggesting he could have his pick of multiple top names for the proposed Windsor Park fight night in August.

However, despite the Belfast man’s claims and the move to make the eagerly anticipated clash between ‘The Jackal’ and ‘The Filipino Flash’ a final eliminator for the WBO title – a strap Scott Quigg challenges Oscar Valdez for on March 10th – promoter Frank Warren this week said the winner of Lee Selby and Josh Warrington may be heading to Belfast later this year.

Two-weight world champ Frampton [24(14)-1(0)] said any number of boxers could be manning the opposite corner in his dream Windsor Park fight night at the official press conference to announce his April bout with future Hall of Fame fighter Donaire.

The Jamie Moore-trained featherweight felt he could choose between the winner of Valdez-Quigg or the victor of Selby and Warrington’s May stadium fight.

Indeed with a relatively short turnaround for the victor of Selby-Warrington, there is a growing school of thought that Frampton may not be facing the winner at the end of Summer – especially in light of Warren’s push for WBO final eliminator status for Frampton-Donaire.

Yet Warren, promoter of both events, seems to have promised the winner of the all-British clash a massive fight with the MTK-advised Belfast man in August providing Frampton defeats the former Pound for Pound #3 in the Spring.

“The featherweight division is one of the most exciting weight classes at the moment, not only in the UK but the World. Over in Belfast, Carl Frampton has a tough fight against former four-weight world champion Nonito Donaire. The winner on May 19th may well find themselves taking him on next,” the veteran promoter outlined.

“This is a fight that we have been working very hard to put together for a while. Josh signed with me a while ago and he’s one of the best fighters I have had the pleasure of working with. We have a great world champion here in Lee Selby, he’s showed a lot of balls accepting this fight here in Josh’s backyard and in front of his fanatical Leeds supporters.”

“We have got all of the ingredients for a fantastic fight on May 19th here at the home of Leeds United. Josh had to go through an eliminator to get himself into the number one spot, he has forced the issue.”
