Frank Warren matchmaker has big fight in mind for Jono Carroll

Jono Carroll has made himself a star on BoxNation and BT Sport this year, and there may be future big fights on the channel for the Dunshaughlin super featherweight.

‘King Kong’ claimed a points win over undefeated Scouser Johnny Quigley during the Summer in Belfast before returning to the city for a major fight on the ‘Frampton Reborn’ card – revelling in the limelight and stopping Humberto De Santiago inside three.

Carroll [15(2)-0] had been due to rematch Deco Geraghty on the Frampton bill before this fight was cancelled two weeks out. Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn has expressed his desire to put this fight on Sky Sports next April as part of Katie Taylor’s homecoming bill.

This is not the only potential big fight in 2018 for Carroll though, with Frank Warren’s matchmaker revealing the dream fight he has in mind for the MTK boxer.

Jason McClory, promoter with Longshots Sports and the highly-acclaimed matchmaker for Queensberry Promotions, wants to put Carroll in with English starlet Lyon Woodstock [10(5)-0] on a big BT Sport bill next year.

McClory was on the Boxing Asylum Podcast recently where was asked about potential matches he would like to make in the new year.

He outlined how “one fight that does spring to mind which might be nice to do, early next season in September is Lyon Woodstock and Jono Carroll.”

“It’s not something we’ve nailed down or have properly discussed, but if I’m fantasy matchmaking that’s a fight I’d like to see.”

On Carroll, he described how “I think he did very well in his last fight and I think those styles gel well.”

Leicester 24 year old Woodstock has raced to 10-0 and took a big step up in his last bout, defeating Craig Poxton in a Fight of the Year contender to claim the WBO European title.

This year has seen Prizefighter winner Carroll pick up both the IBF East/West Europe belt and the IBF Inter-Continental title.

The 25 year old southpaw has returned to camp in Marbella to tick over ahead of his next, to be confirmed, fight date.
