Frank Warren gives Carl Frampton Fight Update

Promoter Frank Warren has issued an update on Carl Frampton‘s future.

The Belfast featherweight has elected to fight on following his loss to IBF champion Josh Warrington in December.

32 later this month, Frampton [26(15)-2(0)] has stated that he is interested in big fights only but concedes that he would be willing to take on one ten-round contest, if needed, to position himself for a major bout.

However, Warren suggests that this won’t be the case and that Frampton will be straight back in in a big fight this summer.

The Queensberry boss was speaking at a press conference today in London to unveil Tyson Fury’s new co-promotional deal with Top Rank.

Warren said that “Carl and I, we spoke, and his management team, we spoke, MTK, and he will be fighting probably end of May, early June, and he will be involved in a very, very big fight.”

The timeframe for the return was already known, with Frampton stating numerous times that he will not be boxing until his May court case with Cyclone Promotions is concluded.

This ruled out a March fight WBO champ Oscar Valdez which Bob Arum was keen on but contact with the Mexican continues – as do talks with WBA champ Leo Santa Cruz regarding a rubber match.

Considering their respective standings, these bouts would surely have to take place in Los Angeles but Warren admits that Belfast is a possibility.

“We will see, he may have to go on the road, it depends who he fights,” noted the veteran promoter.

A rematch with Warrington was ruled out by the Leeds fighter, who is now straddled with a Kid Galahad mandatory, following their December clash.

Prior to the bout, Warren had been keen to talk up the potential of a series of bouts between the pair but the Londoner would go quiet on this front afterwards despite describing the Manchester Arena-hosted fight as the best he had ever seen in Britain.

Now, Warren admits that there is a route to a repeat and outlined how “the ideal world would be for Carl to go out and win a title and then make a unification fight.”

“Providing the two guys keep winning, I’m quite sure we could do that.”

“[Frampton] has never been disingenuous towards Josh about the fight.”

“Josh got his tactics right but [Frampton] felt he didn’t get his gameplan right.”

“If we can make a rematch, we will see, it’s there to be seen.”
