Frank Warren believes Warrington Conlan world title fight is ‘appealing’

Frank Warren seems open to a future fight between IBF featherweight world champion Josh Warrington and Michael Conlan.

The British promoter has noted the Top Rank fighter, who trades leather on top of the Feile card this Saturday night live on ESPN+ and BTSport, has suggested he would like a shot at the fighter who defeated Carl Frampton to retain his strap last December- and believes it is an appealing match up.

When a clash between the pair could be made remains to seen. Conlan may need a few more wins or possibly one significantly noteworthy one to be deemed a viable match for the world champ.

The Belfast fighter and World amateur gold medalist has stated his desire to challenge within the year and has his sights particularly set on a St Patricks Day 2020 shot.

Warrington makes his next defense on October 12, a date that could prove to soon for Conlan for a number of reasons, but with the British fighter finding it hard to secure a fight that will grant him American exposure a March clash in New York with the high profile ESPN fighter may prove attractive providing he still has the title.

It also has to be noted Frampton is keen on a repeat and if he goes on to fight and defeat WBO world champion Oscar Valdez in December he would like a unification with the Yorkshire operator.

Considering the close working relationship between Top Rank, Warren’s Queensbury Promotions and MTK a clash between Warrington and either Belfast man should be easy to make – but it does appear a bout with either could only take place next year at the earliest.

Either way Warren wasn’t shy about planting a Conlan Warrington seed in the build up to the #MTKFightNight at the Féile an Phobail on Saturday night, claiming a dust up would be ‘an appealing one’.

“An outdoor arena is being constructed for Michael’s featherweight showdown – and a decent step up in his 12th fight – against Diego Alberto Ruiz,” Warren wrote in his weekly column.

“It should be well worth tuning in for, especially as Michael has designs on challenging for the IBF world featherweight title held by our own Josh Warrington. Michael rightly backs himself to move quickly in the pro ranks, given his storied amateur pedigree, and a dust-up with Josh would be an appealing one for the fans,” he adds before discussing Warrington.

“The unbeaten Josh, meanwhile, will be back in action on October 12 and looking to maintain the momentum he has generated in victories over Lee Selby, Carl Frampton and Kid Galahad over the last year and a bit. He is a genuine elite world champion and it is important to keep him active.”
