Frampton v Selby will happen says McGuigan

A mouthwatering match up between Carl Frampton and Lee Selby will ‘happen without a doubt’ claims Irish Boxing legend and Cyclone Promotions CEO Barry McGuigan.

However, the proposed Irish-Welsh World title fight won’t be next for ‘The Jackal’ according to former WVAfeatherweight champ McGuigan.

When in Belfast recently with Lee Haskins to promote the IBF bantamweight World champion’s defence against Ryan Burnett, Jamie Sanigar, who also looks after Selby, claimed the IBF featherweight World title holder was ready to come to Windsor this Summer, but it doesn’t seem like Selby is next for the Irish hero.

McGuigan points to Selby’s mandatory as a reason, but suggests it Frampton’s next foe will have to be a big name to ensure doing a Stadium show is viable.

“We want the (Selby) fight too, but he has got his mandatory to take care of. We wanted the Santa Cruz fight, I don’t know that we are going to get it to be honest, we are running out of time,” McGuigan told the BBC.

“We want to put him on in the back end of the Summer in Ireland, but it’s a very costly event so it has to be something meaningful.”

“We may have to bide a bit of time. It may not happen immediately with Selby, but it will happen without a doubt.”

“It’s a fight we want, it’s a great match up and we have the utmost respect for Lee Selby and the Selby’s in general.”
