Carl Frampton backs “role model” Katie Taylor to dominate
When Carl Frampton signed with promoter Frank Warren back in September there were suggestions that the Belfast featherweight could become something of an Anthony Joshua for BT Sport.
The thought was that the popular and talented 30 year old could become something of a figurehead for Queensberry and BT Sport, much like Joshua has been for Matchroom and Sky Sports.
However, Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] himself has likened another Irish fighter to the unified heavyweight champion of the world.
‘The Jackal’ has hailed former amateur team mate Katie Taylor [7(4)-0] in the wake of the Wicklow lightweight’s maiden world title win.
Taylor outpointed Argentinian Anahi Sanchez in an enjoyable fire-fight on the Anthony Joshua v Carlos Takam pay-per-view undercard last month at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
Frampton sees a lot of similarities in the characters of the two London Olympic gold medalists.
Writing in his column for the Sunday Life, Frampton noted how “just like Anthony Joshua, she has a lot of appeal with the way she conducts herself and it’s great to see two good role models like Katie and AJ at the top of the women’s and men’s games.”
Last year Frampton became the first ever Irish fighter to unify belts when he defeated Scott Quigg to join the IBF and WBA super bantamweight straps, and later become just the second from these shores to win titles in two weight classes when he moved up to defeat Leo Santa Cruz for the WBA featherweight crown.
The Tiger’s Bay boxer believes that Katie can do the same and surmised how “Katie Taylor’s domination of women’s boxing has only just started after she picked up the WBA World lightweight title last weekend in Cardiff.”
“Katie gave a good performance last weekend against a tough girl and she’s going to take some stopping from here on.”
“Katie is so far ahead of the rest of the women that I would expect her to clean up the lightweight belts and then go on and win World titles at super-lightweight and welterweight.”
Frampton himself looks to return to the title trail when he makes his comeback next week, headlining the ‘Frampton Reborn’ bill at the SSE Odyssey Arena on Saturday November 18th against Horacio Garcia.
