First Under-18 champion to be crowned tonight

Reigning Under-18 champion and Commonwealth Youth silver medalist Brett McGinty of the Oakleaf club in Derry will defend his welterweight crown tonight at the National Stadium against World Junior bronze medalist Paul Ryan from Kilbarrack’s Bay City BC.

In his opening bout at these championships Ryan defeated Glasnevin’s Jordan Meredith (runner up to McGinty in the previous U18s) before another Dublin derby unanimous decision win against John Maughan of St Mary’s.

McGinty stormed into the final with a first round stoppage win of Limerick’s Jamie Harty and a points victory over Sligo’s Jordan Myers – a former European Schoolboys gold medalist.

The 69kg final is the only decider tonight alongside 11 semi finals. The rest of the finals will be decided tomorrow.

The IABA are using these under 18 Championships as part of their selection process for November’s AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg, Russia.
