Fighter Favourites: ‘The Quiet Man’ Steven Ward

We kick off each week here at Irish-Boxing.com with a look at the favourites of one of the island’s top boxers.

This week in is the turn of Newtownabbey light heavy Steven Ward [3(0)-0], and the quiet man had plenty to saw.

Q: Favourite Current Fighter?
A: I have a good few fighters I really like, but I think it would be Sergey Kovalev. I like watching the way he fights, I think he is a class act. Hits like a bull too!

Q: Favourite Fighter of All Time?
A: Favourite of all time has to be Mr Cuba, three-time Olympic champ Teofilo Stevenson. His style was unreal! The story of how he turned down the fight with Ali, you have to admire that.

Q: Favourite Irish Fighter?
A: That’s between Carl Frampton and Jamie Conlan… Jamie due to the fights he gets in, he really is the Irish Gatti. Not good for his face as he wasn’t blessed with looks as it is! Only messing, but great entertainment to watch.

Q: Favourite Fight?
A: Recently it’s Holyfield vs Qawi. As a cruiser, or a junior heavyweight then, Holyfield was a monster and his movement was brilliant in the first fight.

Q: Favourite of your own Fights?
A: My pro debut, based on the fact it was a home fight in Belfast and everyone that came to watch made some noise – so much that I got goosebumps. My hair would have been standing up on my head if I had any! I’ll always remember that night!
