Fighter Favourites: Spike O’Sullivan

Today marks the start of a new weekly feature for Irish-Boxing.com – Fighter Favourites.

Each week we will quiz an Irish fighter on some of their favourites from the Sweet Science

Starting us off is Cork middleweight and former Irish champion Spike O’Sullivan [23(15)-2(1)]

Q: Favourite Current Fighter?
A: Gennady Golovkin – because, like myself, he is willing to fight the best fighters in the world without hesitation and has a very exciting, come-forward, all-or-nothing style which I’m a big fan of.

Q: Favourite Fighter of All Time?
A: I can’t pick between Mickey Ward and Evander Holyfield! Firstly, on Evander, the condition he used to be in was phenomenal and again his willingness to fight absolutely anyone, his boxing was supreme, and he was a true warrior! Mickey Ward’s trilogy with Gatti will go down in history as one of, if not the best trilogies in boxing history. The guts and determination he showed in those fights was incredible and I have nothing but the greatest respect for that. They say don’t meet your heroes or you’ll be disappointed, but not in this case – I’ve met both and they’re both total gentlemen.

Q: Favourite Irish Fighter?
A: Steve Collins has to be my favourite Irish fighter, closely followed by Carl Frampton. The first pro fight I attended was Collins v Eubank II in Cork in 1995. From that night on, Steve was a hero of mine and I’m honoured to call him a good friend today.

Q: Favourite Fight?
A: Again I’m struggling to pick one. Gatti v Ward, all those fight were belters, all-out wars, my type of fights. Hagler v Hearns though, Hagler had the slogan WAR on his hat and shorts and that’s exactly what it was – a complete out-and-out war for the three rounds it lasted and will go down in boxing history as one of, if not the most explosive three rounds ever.

Q: Favourite of your own Fights?
A: Either v Anthony Fitzgerald, because of the fashion of the win, the atmosphere, and build up to that fight, or when I won the WBO International title on my birthday at Upton Park against Matthew Hall.
