Fighter Favourites: Jay ‘The Negotiator’ Byrne

Our weekly feature ‘Fighter Favourites’ gives Irish boxers the chance to let us know their favourites from the sport.

This week it is the turn of Dublin welterweight Jay Byrne [4(1)-0]. ‘The Negotiator’ has a massive fight this Friday, jumping up to middleweight to face Matchroom star Felix Cash at the York Hall.

Q: Favourite Current Fighter?
A: Gennady Golovkin. I love how tough he is and the punch power. He takes a lot of shots and loves a fight.

Q: Favourite of All Time?
A: My favourite of all time has got to be Joe Calzaghe as he was just relentless and never ducked anyone. He really was one tough cookie and never forgot his routes.

Q: Favourite Irish Fighter?
A: My favourite Irish fighter is Phil Sutcliffe Jr. Although he’s younger than me, I look up to him a lot. His skills and toughness are quality, let alone his punch power. He will become world champion.

Q: Favourite Fight?
A: I loved Sutcliffe’s fight vs Jenkins as it really could have went either way, but I was delighted to see him overcome it. Although Jamie Conlan in the Stadium [v Junior Granados] was a standout too.

Q: Favourite of your own Fights?
A: My own favourite fight was my debut [v Gabor Ambrus] as I was a bag of nerves and questioning myself for a week or two before after so many saying it was a silly debut opponent. I was worried, but to get in and get a KO was the best debut I could ever have dreamt of.
