Ex-footballer Mainwaring outpoints Irish Tommy Carter

Two middleweights of Irish descent battled it out last night in Middleton with ex-Ireland Under-17 footballer Matty Mainwaring emerging victorious over Tommy Carter.

The bout between Carter, of Drogheda stock, and former footballer Mainwaring took place at the Middleton Arena just outside Manchester on the inaugural show ran by Kieran Farrell.

Following a good-natured and well-contested sporting contest, with both having kind words to say about each other afterwards, Salford-born Mainwaring was handed the win on a 40-37 scorecard.

While Tideswell-native Carter was the man with the extensive amateur experience, the former midfielder was able to use his height and trainer Matthew Hatton’s gameplan to negotiate the inside-fighting threat posed by the youngster.

Mainwaring’s ledger now reads 2(0)-0, while Carter’s new professional record starts off at 0-1(0)

After the fight, Matty and his trainer spoke to VIPBoxingPromotionsTV:
