Hearn – “There is only one talent at the moment in women’s boxing, outside of Claressa Shields”

Eddie Hearn sent a thinly veiled attack toward fellow British promoter Frank Warren and claimed he has the true female star of World boxing on his books.

In the build-up this weekend’s big Matchroom card topped by an Anthony Crolla Jorge Linares world title fight, which includes a step up for Katie Taylor as she faces former World title challenger Milena Koleva, Hearn took time at a packed press conference to tell fans to ‘beware of cheap imitations’ when introducing the Bray fighter, the one person he feels can transcend women’s boxing.

The English promoter said “be aware of cheap imitations in the women’s boxing world. For me, there is only one talent at the moment in women’s boxing, outside of Claressa Shields, who brings the style to excite, to invigorate, and to transcend women’s boxing onto the main stage.”

Most believe the Matchroom boss, who also promoters Belfast world title hopeful Ryan Burnett, was taking his chance to have a pop at claims by Frank Warren that he, in Taylor’s fellow London 2012 gold medal winner Nicola Adams, has the future of women’s boxing.

Flyweight Adams, who has no issue with Taylor nor Taylor issue with her, was signed by Warren after Matchroom announced they would be promoting Taylor, and will fight on rival TV station BT Sport.

Hearn was keen to claim that Sky and Matchroom believe Taylor and no other can change the face of the female end of the fight game, and did so in cheeky fashion.

Some suggested the promoter was trying to plant a possible Adams v Taylor seed in a bid to ensure a massive fight blossom, but that seems highly unlikely considering the sizeable weight difference.
