Eddie Hearn reveals December target for Katie Taylor

Eddie Hearn wants Katie Taylor to fight for the kind of title you put around your waist and not the one the that looks good on a billboard next.

The Bray lightweight has been talking about ‘big names’ and ‘big fights’ in recent months and, after dominating Cindy Serrano in Boston last night to retain her IBF and WBA world straps, called out younger sister Amanda.

However, promoter Hearn believes it’s time to return to the undisputed goal and wants Taylor [11(5)-0] to try and add a third belt to her collection.

By all accounts the remaining strap holders, WBC champ Delfine Persoon and WBO titlist Rose Volante have been offered the fight to no avail previously but Hearn is ready to test their resolve and offer them the chance to fight Taylor on December 15th in Madision Square Garden.

Canelo Alvarez takes on Rocky Fielding in the first DAZN ‘blockbuster’ show and the New York bill also features an IBF light heavyweight title clash between Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith and is potentially the landing spot for Jono Carroll’s IBF super featherweight final eliminator versus Guillaume Frenois.

Now pink belt-holder Volante [14(8)-0] is set to receive an offer, an even higher career-best purse, to face Taylor on the massive Christmas card.

Outlining his current plans, Hearn explained how “the original aim was to be the undisputed champion of the division and I would really love to see her fight a champion next – maybe Rose Volante. We have tried and tried but she appears to have carved out a nice little niche for herself in Brazil.”

The Matchroom boss believes, if he bumps up his offer, that the South American will relent and take on the Wicklow star.

Hearn, speaking after Saturday’s DAZN and Sky Sports-broadcast win, Hearn noted that “in boxing it’s a case of keeping making the offers and eventually you get to a number which they cannot turn down and I hope love if she was to finish her career by winning every belt in her division.”

“We will see what we can attract. In the end it’s always down to money.”

Taylor herself just wants big fights. Another world title fight would fall into that catergory and would be welcomed before the year is out but the 32-year-old sensation wants Amanada Serrano more than all.

The six-weight champion was ringside last night and looks set to go back on her retirement claim and face Taylor. This, however, would most likely take place next year, allowing a Volante unification to be squeezed in first.

The Queen Rose won the WBO belt last December, scoring an away victory over Argentine Brenda Carabajal, dropping her twice and claiming a majority-decision. She has since defended the belt twice with stoppages over Panamanian Lourdes Borbua and Colombia Yolis Marrugo Franco.

Taylor said that “I just want to be involved in big fights again, hopefully in Madison Square Garden on December 15th.”

“There was a great atmosphere tonight and it was great to fight one of the Serrano sisters and hopefully the other one is on the way for a fight sometime next year.”

“The fight against Amanda would be huge and it’s the fight that everybody wants to see. But I think she has done everything she can to avoid a fight with me.”
