EBU Rankings July update – Good month for the Irish in Europe

July ended up being a quiet month for Irish boxing, but there are still some changes for our fighters in the European Boxing Union rankings.

The rankings, accounting for all bouts up until the end of last month have six Irish boxers listed.

Wicklow’s Katie Taylor [6(4)-0] has moved up to #2 at lightweight. The title is now vacant following champion Ewa Brodnicka’s move down in weight. Madagascar-born Italian champ Anita Torti [10(3)-6(1)-1] is ranked #1, however a title fight has yet to be ordered. It is assumed Taylor will be heading straight for world titles in any case.

Luke Keeler [13(5)-2(1)] holds firm at #11 in the middleweight rankings as he continues his climb towards a title shot.

Despite losing to EBU #2 Martin J Ward in a British and Commonwealth title clash, Belfast super featherweight Anto Cacace [15(7)-0] has been rewarded for his performance and has moved up four places to #6 on the 130lbs ladder.

Also at super featherweight, Irish champion James Tennyson [19(15)-2(2)] climbs one spot to #12. ‘The Assassin’ is expected to be confirmed soon for the Ryan Burnett v Zhakiyanov undercard in Belfast on October 21st.

Super flyweight is not a weight considered at European level, so Belfast’s Jamie Conlan [19(11)-0] is ranked at bantamweight, and has moved up one place to #3.

Carl Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] remain the #1 featherweight despite his fight with Andres Gutierrez. However the Belfast boxer is targetting world titles and it is unlikely that he will act on his placement here.

Paddy McDonagh, who won the light heavyweight Irish title in June, remains absent from both the European and EU 175lbs rankings

The six male fighters also feature in the EBU European Union rankings (there is no EU title for women).

#10 Middleweight – Luke Keeler (Down 1)
#5 Super Featherweight – Anto Cacace (Up 4)
#10 Super Featherweight – James Tennyson (Up 1)
#1 Featherweight – Carl Frampton (-)
#2 Bantamweight – Jamie Conlan (Up 1)

In addition, five more Irish boxers are also in the EU ladders.

Tommy McCarthy [9(5)-1(0] is up one place to #14 in the cruiserweight rankings.

Peter McDonagh [27(23)-28(2)-1] remains at #19 at welterweight. The Irish champion takes on #18-ranked Shayne Singleton [23(8)-2(2)-1] in Manchester on September 23rd on the Parker-Fury undercard.

Phil Sutcliffe Jr [13(8)-2(1)] falls three places to #28 at light welterweight. The Dubliner is currently training in Marbella ahead of his return following a controversial stoppage loss to Josh Leather in May.

In the super featherweight rankings, Declan Geraghty [15(4)-2(1)] moves up one spot to #19 following his dominant win over the unbeaten Michael Roberts Jr in Scotland.

Finally, Marco McCullough [17(10)-4(3)] has also moved up one spot to #17 at featherweight. Belfast’s McCullough returns to the ring on September 16th at the Devenish Complex following his British title loss against Ryan Walsh.
