Early KO of the Year contender from Ulster Senior Elite Finals

Saturday saw the first major night of boxing in Ireland in 2019 and we may already have our KO of the Year.

The Ulster Elite Senior Championships came to their conclusion at the famous Ulster Hall in Belfast.

A dramatic and entertaining night, there were some quality skills on display as well as all-out wars but, most notably, there were some huge KOs.

Paul McCullagh claimed the light heavyweight title with a first-round stoppage, however there was another massive finish just minutes previously.

Eugene McKeever, the Newry welterweight boxing for the Holy Family club in Drogheda picked up the 69kg title with a stunning finish.

Forcing a count early in the first, McKeever would finish the job soon after with a lightning fast right hand that had his opponent out standing up.

Thankfully his fallen foe, Tiernan Duffy of Clonard, was okay following the stoppage. The teenager, who was both stepping up in weight and stepping into the adult ranks, will no doubt be back – and the pair would talk back in McKeever’s dressing room after the bout.

Look out for Eugene McKeever’s interview with Irish-Boxing.com in the coming days but, for now, watch his title-winning finish below.
