DOUBLE GOLD for Ireland at European Junior Championships

Ireland claimed double gold in the morning session of the European Junior Championships in Russia today.

Ellie Mai-Gartland and Lauren Dempsey were both in incredible form to claim 54kg and 57kg gold respectively in Anapa.

Tipp southpaw Mai-Gartland put on a powerful performance, dominating off the jab and pushing Romanian Maria Gheorghe opponent back throughout en-route to a 30-27 x4, 29-28 unanimous win.

In the bout immediately afterwards, Ryston’s Dempsey overcame a huge height disparity to get inside and outland rangy Russian home favourite Azalia Aminva to score a 3-2 split decision, the result of the tournament no doubt.

There was no joy however for Offaly’s Sinainn Glynn or Roscommon’s Lisa O’Rourke who were defeated by German Ilona Sarembo and Pole Zofia Stackhovyak in the 60kg and 75kg deciders respctively. Cloghan’s Glynn pushed the action against her bigger foe while O’Rourke boxed smoothly and finished well against an aggressive opponent but both will come home with silver.

Ireland’s final finalist, Sligo 80kg Patrick Myers, boxes in the afternoon session against Azerbaijani Murad Alliahverdiyv, a bronze medallist at 75kg last year.

In addition to today’s five finalists, Ireland’s 25-strong team claimed 8 bronze medals through Mickes Donoghue, Breda Quilligan, Jon McConnell, Barry O’Connor, Leanne Murphy, Leah Gallen, Kaitlyn Doyle, and Kori Goad.
