Donovan Decider just another fight for Kieran Molloy on the Road to Tokyo

All roads point to Tokyo for Kieran Molloy.

The Galway welterweight looks to retain his National Elite Senior title this Saturday night in Dublin, live on TG4, where he takes on Limerick’s Paddy Donovan

Molloy decisioned Dubliner Luke Maguire in the semi-finals last weekend and is anticipating a special fight against the Our Lady of Lourdes BC man.

However, while many are calling it the fight of the night and a momentous clash, the 20-year-old claims it is just another step on the road to the 2020 Olympics.

That said, Molloy agrees with his fellow World Junior medallist’s “great match up” predictions and believes decider will be “a cracking bout.”

It’s a consensus held across the board and while it may not be the bloodiest fight of the night it could be purist porn.

Donovan has ramped up the pressure this week, stressing that he will be better prepared having had a tougher route to the final while many feel the fight is the pick of the action at the Stadium.

The neutrals have been hyping the Galway v Limerick battle, Oughterard’s Molloy is playing the final aspect down somewhat.

The Westerner, who enjoyed a break out 2018 by winning one of the toughest weights in Ireland before going on to claim EU bronze, stresses that Saturday is a first step rather than a final destination.

Speaking after his 4-1 win over the extremely game Maguire, Molloy noted how “it was great to get it over and done with now and focus on the final.”

“I’m very confident of getting the job done again and retaining my title next weekend.”

“The final will be another fight for me, another platform working toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”

“I don’t feel any pressure and I’m confident in my own ability. He’s [Donovan] a good boxer and it should be a cracking final.”
