Donovan and Dossen dazzle at European U22 Championships

Paddy Donovan and Gabriel Dossen both successfully opened their accounts this afternoon at the European Under-22 Championships in Russia with wide wins.

Both had failed to receive byes so were in Round of 32 action and both scored wins in Vladikavkaz.

Limerick welter Donovan bounced back from his Irish Elite final loss to Kieran Molloy with a 4-1 triumph over Dutch puncher Sam Wagensvela.

The OLOL southpaw had to pass a late fitness test having required 30 stitches to a cut suffered in the aforementioned final and managed to stay largely out of trouble, with the one scoreline against him seemingly very off.

Galway middleweight Dossen would then dominate Moldovan Andrei Vreme, taking a 5-0 win in which he dropped just one round on one scorecard.

The pair now both box on Monday in the last 16, with Dossen in against Romanian Alberto Simion who received a walkover while Donovan faces Russia home favourite Vakhid Abbasov who beat French fighter Milan Prat.

Davey Oliver Joyce will be in action shortly in the evening session. The Ballymun BC lightweight’s Round of 32 bout versus Ukrainian Oleg Chulyacheyev is due to start at 3:15pm (Irish time) in Ring A. You can watch Joyce’s fight below:

Amy Broadhurst won her Last 16 bout yesterday while Shauna O’Callaghan was eliminated – with Pierce O’Leary and Mary Geraghty still to come tomorrow.
