“Disappointed” Spike O’Sullivan promises more as KO streak continues

Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan [28(20)-2(1)] registered his fifth successive stoppage win in a row on Friday night in LA but warned fans he still has a lot more to give.

The Cork middleweight navigated what looks to be step one of a two-step path to a clash with the winner of the Gennady Golovkin v Canelo Alvarez rematch with a facile win versus the overmatched Berlin Abreu.

The Puerto Rican welterweight didn’t leave his StubHub Center stool after the third round, granting ‘Spike’ career stoppage number 20.

With Abreu moving up in weight and O’Sullivan in the form of his life, a stoppage win always looked on the cards. However, the Mahon man was somewhat disappointed he didn’t score a highlight reel KO.

The 33-year-old also seemed aware the win was a bit anti climactic considering he was so close to fighting Golovkin on the same weekend but warned fans will get to see him land big and perform when the big fights do come around this year.

“I was disappointed,” he admitted after the fight.

“I would have like for him to come out and get the opportunity to put him on the canvas for the fans, but it wasn’t to be tonight. I got the job done inside the distance and I felt as though I would have done very soon if he had come out anyway.”

“I think I still have a lot more in the locker and a lot more ability that I showed. He didn’t bring the best out of me. If you look at my last fight with Antoine Douglas I showed a lot more in that fight.”

“The bigger the occasion and the better fighter will bring a lot more from me.”

By all accounts ‘Spike’ will now return on the undercard of a massive GGG-Canelo rematch mooted for September 15th before facing the winner afterwards.

However, there has been increasing murmurs that he may go straight in with Canelo on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Following his latest win, the Paschal Collins-trained fighter wouldn’t comment on what exactly was next, but he admitted he was heading for another round of talks with Golden Boy who he has a three fight deal with.

“Whatever Golden Boy offer me I will be happy to oblige we will sit down tonight and talk about [what’s next],” the showman added before tipping his Sombrero to the Mexican fans on Cinco De Mayo.

“It was an honour to fight here tonight. I am a big fan of the Mexican people they are like the Irish, they are warriors and they have a similar history to my country. I have been a big fan of the Mexican boxers also and I love the Mexican style of fighting.”

“I think I fight like a Mexican fighter myself and it was a absolute honour to fight on the holiday and I would like to fight again on their next holiday.”
