Declan Geraghty ready to go under-the-radar ahead of 50-50 clash

There is no question about it, ‘Pretty Boy’ likes his share of the spotlight, but he is happy to somewhat step into the shadows this weekend in a bid to get rounds.

Declan Geraghty [15(4)-2(1)] returns to the ring for the first time since July of last year and for the first time since his high profile fight with Jono Carroll fell through on this Saturday night’s ‘Danger at the Devenish 3’ card in Belfast.

The two-weight National Elite Senior champion admits he would prefer to be on big TV card, but accepts the fact he needs rounds and takes consolation from the knowledge that he has another big clash in the pipeline.

“It gets harder [to fight on small hall shows] when you have fought on the big shows in big fights,” Geraghty told Irish-Boxing.com.

“It’s harder to sell tickets too, but it has to be done and I am looking forward to it. I haven’t fought in seven months and in the end I only had two fights last year.”

“When you look back it’s been a year since I fought Tennyson and fought on TV. That’s how long it’s been so I am happy with the warm-up fight,” he noted before revealing that there are big plans afoot.

“I can tell you after that we have a nice fight. I can’t say who it is yet, but it’s a nice fight.”

“On paper, it’s a 50/50 fight but I will win and in style. It will build up to other things after this fight.”

The last time he hinted at a ‘big fight’ the rematch with rival Jono Carroll – who is now fighting Marco McCullough on the massive Frampton-Donaire card – was announced soon after, but it seems the Dubs are being kept apart for now.

“It looked like it was going to be me and Jono on the Katie Taylor card, there was no pen to paper, but I think it might have happened.”

“I don’t know what happened with regard to me and Jono. Look he is doing his thing and I am doing mine and we will see what happens.”

“I wish him and the whole show the very best. The April 21 card is a cracking show.”

Without knowing it, Geraghty was up close and personal at the weekend with the fighter he is to face this coming Saturday.

The 27-year-old southpaw part of Karl Kelly’s corner on Saturday just gone and populated the same dressing room as the game and tough Edwin Tellez – who was outpointed by Stevie Quinn Jr on the MHD Promotions card.

The stylist missed the chance to see an opponent he knows little about fight in person, but won’t be too perturbed as he is confident of victory on the stacked card regardless.

“I don’t know too much about him yet to be honest,” Geraghty admitted.

“Look I am beating this lad and moving back to big fights. The only thing for me is whether or not I get the stoppage.”

“It’s four rounds so it might be hard if he is one of these journeymen that is an expert at surviving. Hopefully I will get the stoppage and if I do I think it will be with a body shot. I have been working on that in this camp,” he added before the super featherweight revealed he may be fighting as high as light welter on Saturday.

“I am not sure if I am fighting at lightweight or light welter. I have a fight soon after and I don’t want to be coming down, going back up and then coming down again. It’s better to gradually work down.”

“I am training away at 64kgs now so there is no point in taking off a load of weight. I spar welterweights and even Jay Byrne at light middle. I spar Phil [Sutcliffe] and he is sitting at 74kgs and everyone knows how strong he is.”
