Declan Geraghty secures big TV fight

Not quite the opportunity to defeat Jono Carroll, but Declan Geraghty [16(4)-2(1)] has been afforded the chance to outdo his arch rival.

While it might not cross the Dublin super featherweight stylist’s mind initially, he will be keen to impress against one Johnny Quigley [14(3)-1(0)] late next month.

‘Pretty Boy’, who registered victory number 16 in Belfast on Saturday night, makes a return to big fight action in Preston on Saturday March 31st and takes on the Liverpudlian on a Guild Hall bill that will be shown live on FreeSports.

Having went away to defeat Scotland’s Michael Roberts Jr last year, it is another on-the-road opportunity for Geraghty – and Quigley, another noted stylist, certainly provides him with the chance to prove he is ready to progress to the next level.

Quigley represents Geraghty’s rival Jono Carroll’s best win, with ‘King Kong’ having scored a win over the English boxer last Summer.

The charismatic Dunshaughlin southpaw defeated the Liverpool fighter after an epic twelve rounds in which he knocked Quigley down twice and held off a spirited fightback.

Carroll picked up the IBF East/West Europe title and, after that win, he went on to add the IBF Inter-Continental belt and has recently been inserted at #8 in the organisation’s rankings.

Geraghty will be hoping a win next month will have a similar effect for him as he chases rematches with both Carroll and Tennyson.

The 27-year-old easily outpointed Edwin Tellez on Saturday over four rounds at The Devenish, and will come into the bout sharp.

For the mercurially talented Quigley it’s straight back in at the deep end. The unorthodox southpaw, also 27 years old, hasn’t looked for a comeback win or a ring rust-shaking bout and his clash with Geraghty is his first since the Waterfront Hall reverse versus Carroll.
