Declan Geraghty wants James Tennyson rematch following rewatch

Not even messages of support and praise from Conor McGregor – someone who knows what it’s like to suffer high profile defeats and bounce back in style – could console Declan Geraghty after his knockout loss to James Tennyson in March.

That night at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, Geraghty recovered from a second round knockdown to dominate the proceeding rounds and take a lead on the scorecard before Tennyson dropped him heavily and stopped his standing in the sixth.

The Dublin fighter did front-up to the media and publicly took the defeat like a man, but took little solace from those telling him he excelled in parts of the fight and was said to be downbeat for some time after the Irish title reverse.

However, upon watching the clash back in recent weeks, Geraghty [15(4)-2(1)] has a whole new mindset to the fight and is rematch keen.

Despite being dropped twice in the fight ‘Pretty Boy’ claims he “schooled” Tennyson – who took his chance to impress and like Geraghty’s previous defeater Jono Carroll immediately went on to secure success on a big Sky card.

The MTK southpaw now says he wants to finish the lesson and is keen to rematch the proud owner of a WBA #5 world ranking.

“I watched the fight back for the first time a few weeks ago and I thought to myself ‘I schooled that young fella’.”

“He got brought to school over and over again in that fight, but in fairness he trundled along and he changed the fight with a big shot.”

“He is a nice fella and Irish so I will always wish him all the best.”

“He is after doing great for himself, f*ck me he is now ranked top five in the world, who wouldn’t want that?”

Geraghty has teased at an all-Irish fight before Christmas – although this will not be Tennyson [19(15)-2(2)], who boxes in next month against Darren Traynor.

The Dubliner believes he can avoid the power of ‘The Assassin’ if and when they meet again.

“I want a rematch and believe me the result will be different when it happens,” outlined Geraghty.

“When that happens I don’t know, but he will be brought to school again and this time he will be kept there.”
