Dean Gardiner’s misses out on Olympic Qualification

A close first round proved decisive this morning in Baku and saw Dean Gardiner fall at the final hurdle in the AOB Olympic qualifier.

Breakfast took on Italian Guido Vianello in the final today in Azerbaijan needing victory to secure a spot in Rio, but lost out 28-29 across the board.

A close first round perhaps saw the Tipperary man land the bigger, cleaner, and more eye-catching shots but the judges sided with the greater activity of Vianello.

Vianello kicked it up a gear in the second to leave Gardiner with a mountain to climb, and while Breakfast did enough to take the final round, he could not score a decisive KO.

Michael O’Reilly, who has already qualified for the more populous middleweight decision, won his final this morning via walkover.
