2003: Longford’s Michael Gomez rolled back the years to cause a huge shock and defeat British super featherweight champion Alex Arthur in Edinburgh. Gomez had previously held the belt before falling on harder times, but the Manchester Mexican put on the performance of a lifetime to pummel the Freddie Roach-trained Scotsman into a fifth round stoppage loss.

1960: Belfast’s Freddie Gilroy was defeated by Algerian Alphonse Halimi for the vacant bantamweight World title at the Empire Pool in Wembley. The Olympic bronze medalist was dropped in the thirteenth en-route to a ffteen-round points loss. Gilroy’s Belfast rival would claim the title of Halimi the following year.

2013: Donegal’s Jason Quigley guaranteed silver, Ireland’s first ever, at the World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, following a unanimous decision win over Russian Artem Chebotarev. En-route to the final the Ballybofey man had beaten Indian star Vijender Singh, Scot Aston Brown, and Hungarian Zoltan Harcsa. Quigley would lose in the final to home fighter Zhanibek Alimkhanuly (who had recieved a bye in the last four from Anthony Fowler).
