1956: Drogheda’s Tony ‘Socks’ Byrne, captain of the Irish boxing team, won Olympic bronze in Melbourne. The Louth lightweight followed up a disqualification win over Czechoslovakian Josef Chovanec with a points triumph against Luis Molina of the United States of America. Byrne lost to German Harry Kurschat in the last four.
2008: Katie Taylor won her second World Championships gold in Ningbo, China, with a dominant 13:2 win over home favourite Dong Cheng. En-route to the final the Wicklow lightweight had defeated Aussie Emma Carruthers (20:3), Czech fighter Danuse Dilhofova (4:3), Argentine Celeste Peralta (first round stoppage), and Russian Aizanat Gadzhieva (20:2)
1989: In a North Belfast derby, Sam Storey defended his British super middleweight title with a ninth round stoppage of an exhausted Noel Magee at the Ulster Hall.

2014: Tyson Fury dominated Dereck Chisora in their rematch for the for the British and European heavyweight titles, forcing the Zimbabwean to retire in the tenth round.

2014: On the undercard at the ExCel Arena Frankie Gavin defended his British welterweight title (which he already had defended thrice so as to keep the belt for good) against the then-unbeaten Bradley Skeete. The former Irish champion took a close unanimous decision (116-112, 116-113 x2).
