2008: A glorious day in Poland saw Ireland claim six medals in the finals of the European Union championships. and position the team brilliantly for their break-out Olympics in Beijing less than two months later. David Oliver Joyce, John Joe Nevin, Ken Egan, and the late Darren Sutherland all grabbed top spot in Cetniewo, with Sutherland and Egan defeating future Olympic foes James Degale and Tony Jeffries respectively. There were also silvers for Paddy Barnes and a young Con Sheehan. John Joe Joyce had lost to Gyula Kate in the quarter finals, but would avenge this defeat in Beijing.

2008: On the same night in Birmingham, Michael Gomez had a young Amir Khan in a spot of bother in their Commonwealth title fight at the National Indoor Arena. The Longford man, long past his best, had Khan down and hurt in the second with a left hook before eventually being stopped inside five
