2008: The late Darren Sutherland comfortably defeated Venezuela’s Alfonso Blanco (11:1) to guarantee bronze at the Beijing Olympics. In the previous round the Dubliner had stopped Algerian Nabil Kassel. Sutherland would be defeated in the semi finals by British rival James Degale (3:10).
1923: Belfast’s Dave Magill inflicted a tenth round retirement loss on Boy McCormick, flooring him in the fourth, to win the inaugural Irish light heavyweight title in Liverpool. Magill had only won the Irish heavyweight title just two months previously.
1937: Skerries boxer Eddie Dunne knocked out champion George Kelly with a body-shot in the sixth round of their Irish lightweight title bout at Dalymount Park.
