David Lemieux comes in for criticism following disgusting comments about Spike O’Sullivan

David Lemieux [39(33)-4(2)] has come in for some heavy criticism following some off-colour comments about Spike O’Sullivan.

The middleweight pair are set to box in a WBA final eliminator tomorrow night in Las Vegas on the Gennady Golovkin v Canelo Alvarez rematch undercard and the fight has seen a heated build-up.

There were social media snipes over the past few weeks and there has been plenty said during fight week – not least 34-year-old O’Sullivan’s astonishing press conference salvo last night – but some comments from Lemieux have been described as going too far.

The Canadian former world champion has controversially outlined his desire to not just knock out O’Sullivan [28(2)-2(1)] but to cause the Cork man lasting physical damage.

29-year-old Lemieux said that “I’m going to give him a lot of misery.”

“It’s definitely not going the distance, I won’t let that happen, but I want to torture him a bit before. He’s a tough guy so he might make it to five rounds but we’ll see.”

“I want to damage him, for life. I want to cut his head off.”

“I know when I start landing my shots I will be breaking some bones in there. I’m going to break all his bones.”

“Viewers’ discretion is advised. Whoever is sensitive, please be careful. If there are kids around, don’t let them watch. It’s going to be brutal.”

Ironically, Lemieux’s claimed reasoning behind the classless comments was the ‘disrespect’ he had received from a ‘trashy’ O’Sullivan.

The Montreal man described how “O’Sullivan is very disrespectful guy, he has no class.”

“He is a very trashy type of guy, he talks all types of things on social media.”

“I’m just going to be a lot more dangerous in the fight. I’m going to give him a lot less mercy.”

With tragedies in the ring still taking place far too often and the lasting effects of boxing becoming more and more known, Lemieux’s comments have come in for widespread criticism.

Numerous outlets describe the talk as having gone too far, while the pre-eminent Boxing News noted how “such threats should have no place in boxing under any circumstances.”
