Davey Oliver Joyce claims he offered to replace Jono Carroll – but Marco McCullough refused

Davey Oliver Joyce [7(6)-0] claimed the biggest win of his pro career last night but the Mullingar super feather wishes it could have been better.

Joyce stopped Jordan Ellison, one of Britain’s top ‘away’ fighters in the sixth round on the Frampton-Donaire undercard in Belfast, forcing the referee to step in as he became increasingly dominant.

Following the win, where he became one of the few to stop Sunderland’s Ellison, Joyce would reveal that he had accepted a short-notice all-Irish fight only for it to not materialise.

‘The Punisher’ claimed that he agreed to face Belfast’s Marco McCullough [19(12)-4(3)] on the big bill last night following the withdrawal of Jono Carroll.

IBF Inter-Continental titlist Carroll suffered a nasty cut a couple of weeks out from his fight with McCullough and was forced to pull out. McCullough ended up outpointing Nicaraguan Arnoldo Solano over six rounds on the untelevised portion of the BT Sport bill but could have faced Joyce on TV instead, if the Rio Olympian is to be believed.

“I was offered to fight Marco McCullough and I was delighted to take the opportunity,” Joyce told IFL TV in the dressing room afterwards.

The 31-year-old was slightly perturbed that McCullough, allegedly, refused to fight him and stated that he is keen to fight the Shankill Road man or an opponent of that level.

Joyce outlined how “me and my team were game for it, we wanted that fight – he was offered more money, a TV slot, and he denied it.”

“I hope I can get some big fights like that in the future. I want to keep going up the ladder and I want big fights.”
