Darragh Foley v Tyrone McKenna the most exciting Dublin v Belfast fight in 30 years

Darragh Foley [17(9)-3(0)-1] will visit a Belfast phone box and turn from ‘average’ back to ‘Super’ in what he believes is the best Belfast v Dublin fight in 30 years.

It was this week confirmed that the Sydney-based Dub takes on stablemate Tyrone McKenna in an already eagerly anticipated clash on the top of an Ulster Hall-hosted fight night on June 21st.

Foley is predicting “something incredible” and believes it could go down as an historic domestic clash.

However, more importantly, the formerly world ranked light welter and Australian champion is adamant fight fans will see him make a return to his best.

The Blanch native hasn’t been too impressed with his own performances of late despite bouncing back from defeat in a sloppy bout with Akeem Ennis Brown with two Down Under wins.

Yet, come June 21st, the straight-talking, big-punching war lover is promising he will live up to his ‘Super’ ring moniker and leave average displays behind him

“Fans can expect ‘Super’ Foley now – because that was ‘Average’ Foley in my last fight. Now I just want to win, win, win because the pain of losing is still fresh in my mind,” Foley explained.

“I always take one fight at a time. All I’m fixated on in Tyrone McKenna.”

In recent years we have seen an increase in the Belfast v Dublin clash and with the ‘Mighty Celt’ proving a Dublin duck egg beater with wins over Jake Hanney and Sean Creagh.

However, Foley believes the #MTKFightNight bill topper will prove the best of the lot, indeed he thinks it stands up against anything the big city rivalary has thrown up in decades – perhaps since Steve Collins v Sam Storey in Boston 30 years ago.

“This is the most exciting Belfast vs. Dublin title fight on paper in 20 or 30 years. I’m up for creating history.”

Foley promises he is ready to go to war on his return to Ireland – his first professional fight on these shores.

However, McKenna, who himself is war prone, is under orders to use his skill set of late and Foley may face a more tactical battle.

The 30-year-old warns he is prepared for both scenarios.

“I’ll walk to the middle of the ring and if he does, so be it. However it pans out tactically, I think we’re going to do something incredible in there.”
