Danny Vaughan to stand in for Pete Taylor following Bray shooting

Sean Turner [12(8)-2(0)] will face Nathan Gorman this Saturday night in a big heavyweight showdown in Manchester and will have a new face in his corner following the horrific events of the past few days.

Turner is trained by Pete Taylor but the Leeds coach was injured on Tuesday morning in a shooting at Bray Boxing Club.

Taylor suffered non life-threatening injuries, being shot in the arm with the bullet passing through to his chest in an incident which saw another man injured and a third, 50-year-old Bobby Messett, sadly killed. None of the three victims have any involvement in criminality.

Despite this ordeal, Turner will still fight on the Tyson Fury comeback undercard this weekend at the Manchester Arena and Liverpudlian coach Danny Vaughan will stand in for Taylor who is currently recovering in hospital.

Turner was in Manchester this afternoon for the final undercard press conference where he came face-to-face with the Ricky Hatton-trained Gorman [12(10)-0] who is a heavy favourite for their clash.

The Shankill slugger linked up with Taylor, father of Olympic gold medallist Katie, last year.

Results-wise, the partnership got off to a rocky start with Turner losing to Polish dangerman Kamil Sokolowski in April but the Dubliner made notable physical and technical improvements under Taylor.

Following a comeback win over tough Cameroonian Blaise Mendouo, Turner then went overseas and dominated and stopped former David Haye opponent and EBU-EE champion Arnold Gjergjaj, finishing ‘The Cobra’ in the eighth and final round of their clash in Basel.

‘Big Sexy’ then took a short-notice fight, without Taylor in his corner, versus elite prospect Filip Hrgovic in Germany where he was outpointed over eight – but his grit and gameness won him many fans including Eddie Hearn and Nisse Sauerland. A big fight with Dereck Chisora was mooted afterwards but injury to Turner prevented this and he would then take the Gorman opportunity.

Turner is joined in the Taylor Made gym by Ballyfermot middleweight Luke Keeler, Naas lightweight Gary Cully, and Mullingar super featherweight Davey Oliver Joyce. Taylor continues to train amateurs and the gym in Bray boasts a number of young Irish champions and internationals including welterweight Shannon Reilly.
