Dangerous Dai Davies promises another Irish upset

Forget the BUI Celtic title, Dai Davies [14(2)-25(12)-2] is still chasing the British title dream and says he will claim victory on the Celtic Clash 3 card next month to ensure he takes a step toward a Lonsdale title tilt.

The experienced Welsh fighter warned Eric Donovan [4(3)-0], who he fights for the featherweight version of the eight-round strap, to expect the same treatment Marco McCullough got the last time ‘Dutter’ visited Ireland.

The reigning Welsh champion, who has had a somewhat schizophrenic career with good wins scattered among defeats to some title-level operators, defeated a then novice McCullough back in 2011 and is confident he can upset Kildare favourite Donovan in similar fashion.

Boxing Ireland Promotions see this as a chance for ‘Lilywhite Lightning’ to strike a significant win, claim a title, improve his ranking, and add a known name to his record.

However, the 34 year old away fighter is adamant he will grab the headlines after the September 9th title clash and move himself toward a coveted British title shot.

“Just because I am going into his back yard, it’s not his opportunity to shine, it’s mine. I went to Belfast and beat McCullough when they said I wouldn’t. I am going to do the same in Dublin.”

“A win here gets me back in the mix for a British title shot and I am going to snatch it with both hands.”

Merthyr Tydfill’s Davies has had a mixed career. He flirted with journeyman mode on a number of occasions, but would always produce an eye catching away wins amidst some defeats to high profile names.

The veteran puncher seems to be coming to Dublin in the right frame of mind.

He isn’t pay day motivated, rather he wants to claim another belt and increase his chances of a fulfilling a British title dream.

“I’ve been in camp for weeks already and I have changed a few things in the gym. I am going to be 100 percent on the night. I have still got it, I’m still chasing it, I’m still enjoying it and I won’t stop till I get myself back in the mix,” he added.

“It’s nice to have the chance to go to Ireland again in a real fight. It’s been a bumpy road with good times and bad. I have had a few decisions go against me, but the love for the game is back. I am fully focused and I will be adding the BUI Celtic title to my collection.”

The ‘Celtic Clash 3: Building Champions’ card also features Colin O’Donovan, Michael Gallagher, Regan Buckley, Carl McDonald, Chris Mullally, Marn Quinn, Stephen McAfee, Niall O’Connor, James Cahill, Gerard Whitehouse, Bernard Roe, John Joyce, Vladimir Belujsky, Liam Gaynor, and Dylan McDonagh.
Tickets cost €30 (Balcony), €40 (Gallery), €60 (Ringside), €100 (VIP Premium), and €15 (Under-15s gallery – must be bought alongside an adult ticket) and are available to buy from the fighters involved, or online at Ticketmaster.ie.
