Cyclone Promotions sign first female fighter

Irish promotional company Cyclone Promotions have added another fighter to their ranks.

The outfit, fronted by former WBA featherweight champion Barry McGuigan, have snapped up top English amateur Chantelle Cameron.

ccThe 26 year old will enter the pros in the lightweight division – the same class as Ireland’s Katie Taylor [5(3)-0].

English champion in 2010 and 2015, Cameron has plenty of international experience. In 2010, at light welter, she won EU silver. Moving down afterwards, Cameron won EU bronze in 2011, being defeated (10:28) by Taylor in the semis.

The fighter from the Far Cotton club had hoped to qualify for the Rio Olympics, but was eliminated at the Round of 32 stage at the World Championships in 2016 (which acted as a qualifying event), losing to eventual Katie Taylor defeator Mira Potkonen. In the previous qualifier in Samsun, Turkey, Cameron was beaten in the opening round by Yana Alekseevna.

Cameron becomes the fifth fighter currently on the Cyclone books, joining Carl Frampton, Conrad Cummings, Josh Taylor, and Josh Pritchard.

The Northampton boxer will be trained alongside the rest of the Cyclone Promo crew at Shane McGuigan’s gym in London, which also is home to George Groves and David Haye.
