Conor Wallace opponent wins gold at World Universities

Conor Wallace got a further validation of his talents today in Thailand.

The Newry middleweight was eliminated from the World University Championships on Monday in his opening bout in unfortunate circumstances. The UUJ student floored Valerii Kharlamov of the Ukraine with a huge left in the first round of their last sixteen fight but then retired with due to a nasty cut from an accidental head-clash at the end of the second.

Following this TKOI win for Kharlamov, the Ukranian stormed to gold, defeating Taiwanese fighter Chin-An Yeh (30-27 x3), Frenchman Bengoro Bamba (29-27 x2, 28-28) before a win in this morning’s final over Russian Artem Garashchuk.

Also today, Athlone heavyweight Ken Okungbowa received his bronze medal. Ireland’s other medalist, Cork middleweight Christina Desmond will receive her bronze tomorrow.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home from Thailand via Dublin Airport on Monday morning at 10:10am (Terminal 2).
