Classy Connor Coyle ready to take fast-track to the top

One of the most impressive performers on the Red Corner ‘Unfinished Business’ card in Dublin on Saturday was Connor Coyle [3(1)-0]

In what was just his third fight, Coyle dominated Nicaraguan survivor Miguel Aguilar over four rounds. The Commonwealth Games bronze medalist put in a confident and assured performance to claim an eye-catching win, with his ring generalship and bodywork being singled out for high praise.

Indeed it looked more like the Derry middleweight’s tenth fight rather than his third, and there is a definite feeling that the 26 year old has the ability to be fast tracked.

This is something which the Florida-based pro agrees with, and he told Irish-Boxing.com afterwards that “for 3-0, I feel I can go up the rankings quickly.”

“I think I adapt to things a lot quicker than an average person. With my amateur background, I’ve a lot of fights under my belt and plenty of rounds of sparring over the years. The amateur background has given me that edge in the professionals.”

It was the strongest opponent of Coyle’s career yet, and he noted that Aguilar “was very tough, he’s a tough journeyman. He had plenty of fights, over 210 rounds under his belt, I only had five!”

“I just wanted to get the rounds in and keep up a high tempo to build up my endurance. ”

Keeping quite active since his debut in September, the St Joseph’s boxer will be back in Stateside action in less than three weeks time. Looking to stay busy, Coyle outlined that “we’ve one more fight on Paddy’s Day in Tampa, my last four rounder, then we’ll move up to six, then on to eight rounders and maybe a title before the end of 2017. Maybe even the Irish title.”

“Red Corner are doing three or four shows a year in Ireland, and I’ll have three or four shows a year in Tampa. Basically, I’ll be over in Tampa for training camps and then we’ll be traveling over here for fights. I’m going back now on Friday [March 3rd].”

“I’m in the hands of Jim McLoughlin, a Hall of Fame coach. He’s been around the block, he knows his stuff, so I just listen to what he says. Whatever he says, I do.”
