Conlan aiming for Commonwealth Gold

London 2012 bronze medallists Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan have been named in the Northern Ireland team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.

Barnes (gold), Patrick Gallagher (gold), Eamonn O’Kane (gold), Tommy McCarthy (silver) and Steven Ward (silver) finished in podium positions at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India to help Northern Ireland finish on top of the medals table ahead of the host nation. Results here.

Boxing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games was held at the Talkatora Stadium, the venue in which Katie Taylor won her first AIBA World Elite gold in 2006.

Speaking here  ahead of the tournament, AIBA World No.2 Michael Conlan, said that his target is gold.

“That’s my aim and that’s my expectation. It’s the only thing that I’ll be thinking about. For me, anything else will be failure. Right now, I’m number two in the world and ranked number one in the Commonwealth so winning overall can be the only goal,” he said.

Women’s boxing will debut at the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games for the first time next month. Michaela Walsh, who lined out for Ireland at the recent European Elite Championships and reached the quarter-finals, and Alanna Audley-Murphy, a bronze medallist for Ireland at the 2006 EU Championships, have been named in the Glasgow squad.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games will take place between July 27th and August 3rd.
