Commonwealth KO for James McGivern

James McGivern announced his arrival in Australia this morning with a second-round knockout win.

Having received a bye to the Last 16, the Belfast lightweight put on a sensational performance in his opening fight of the Commonwealth Games, destroying Zambian Emmanuel Ngoma.

The 20-year-old barely shipped a punch in the opening round, peppering the African with classy counters and snaking straight shots.

Then, upping the pace in the second, the fast hands of McGivern forced a standing count before a flurry floored Ngoma and convinced the referee to wave off the bout.

A hugely impressive win, former European Schoolboys gold, European Youth silver, and Commonwealth Youth gold medalist McGivern remains undefeated as a Senior boxer.

The St George’s club man will box to guarantee bronze next at around 11:00am on Wednesday morning. Here he faces Mauritian Jean John Colin, who defeated Tonga Tuihalangingie Vea this morning in a scrappy affair.

An international fighter the past decade, Colin is an African gold medalist (2009) and is competing in his third Commonwealth Games.

Today, at 10:30am, Rio Olympian Brendan Irvin will get his campaign underway. The Belfast flyweight faces dangerous Barbadian Jabali Breedy.
