Chunk Gallagher – “I knew when I put pressure on him I could get him out”

It was more gorilla to the jungle than duck to water as Michael Gallagher [1(1)-0] made his pro debut on Saturday night.

The Donegal 21 year old didn’t just look at home in the pro ring, he looked like he owned it and had to do all he could to defend it against invaders.

The Youth Olympic bronze medalist bombed Poland’s Mateusz Rybarski out of there in the third round of his first pro fight. The softly-spoken Kinletter then turned to his fans, slammed the ropes, and roared with a passion that would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

It looked like the cruiser was out to make a statement, but speaking after the fight he was adamant he approached his pro debut in the same manner that he has approached all his fights previous.

According to ‘Chunk’ that the big-hitting, crowd-pleasing style is nothing new.

“I wasn’t thinking anything other boxing the way I always box. I went in to do just that and if it went the four rounds, it went the four rounds – but it didn’t, and I am happy with my performance,” he told Irish-Boxing.com after the win.

While his style was the same Gallagher did not there were some differences to a pro fight night than his previous amateur fares.

“It was some buzz compared to the amateurs,” noted Chunk.

“The family and crowd were amazing. I am grateful for the support and I am happy they enjoyed it too.”

Rybarski had fought at the National Stadium previously appearing on the last Celtic Clash card. On that night he was more game against Johnny Corcoran, but he shut up shop early against Gallagher and the Finn Valley fighter feels he knows why.

“I think he noticed I had power and he backed off then. He was quite defensive, but I knew when I put pressure on him I could get him out,” he continued before looking ahead quite tentatively.

“I’ll keep ticking over now and look forward to the next one now. I just want more fights now and to be kept busy. I am happy with tonight for now. ”
