JOHN JOE Nevin has set his sights on the one medal missing from his decorated trophy cabinet, a European Championship medal.
The Mulingar sensation boasts one of the more impressive Irish amateur CV’s and medal collections with five National titles, two World bronze medals, two EU medals and an Olympic sliver, but has never draped a European medal around his neck.
That is something the WSB fighter hopes to amend in Belarus next month
Speaking after his 14-6 win over Elias Friha in Cork on Sunday Nevin highlighted his continental ambitions.
“It was a good fight and a good win,” Nevin said of the victory “That was me first amateur fight since the Olympic final, I’ve been fighting in the WSB (World Series of Boxing, semi-pro) since then. It’s good to get back to doing three three-minute rounds, fighting again with the vest on and the head-gear – it’s very different.
“I’m missing one medal from my collection, a European championship medal, that’s the only one missing and I’d love to have that before I end my amateur career.”
Nevin looked impressive, as per usual, on Friday, he is out of today’s return due to injury, but claims he is feeling stronger as the Euro’s approach.
“This is a slower pace than the WSB, took me a while to get into my stride but one thing about the WSB, my power is increasing all the time and you saw that there when I dropped him in the third round. I’m punching harder, getting stronger. I’m boxing at 61kg in the WSB, back down to 56kg now tonight and that makes it a bit tougher. I felt though that I was getting stronger as the fight went on, I was really getting on top of him, but he’s a good lad, a good young fighter.”

MICHAEL CONLAN was too fast and strong for Samuel Kistohurry as Ireland registered a Less Bleus white wash in Cork last night, but warned his French foe to expect a tougher test today.
The Belfast fighter looked impressive as he registered a 25-10 win, but admitted he held something back for the return leg today.
The Olympic bronze medalist was happy with his performance and the victory, but hopes to produce more in the National Stadium this evening.
The St John Bosco club man also suggested the win and international fights will prove helpful as the Europeans approach.
“It is Good to back to winning ways,” said Conlan who lost to Andrew Selby in the WSB last time out.
“That’s the main thing, I am happy with the performance. It was a decent fight, didn’t really go full tilt but you can’t when you’re meeting him again on Sunday. I couldn’t go as hard as I’d like in case he wouldn’t make that fight, had to take it easy enough. Things are building up nicely for the Europeans at the end of the month, looking forward to that.”

London 2012 silver medalist John Joe Nevin and current European champion Joe Ward are out of Sunday’s Elite international with France after picking up hand injuries in last night’s 10-0 victory over the French at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork.
Describing the injuries as slight, Irish head coach Billy Walsh said that there was no point taking any further risks with the European Championships now just a matter of weeks away.
Walsh also confirmed that London 2012 bronze medalist Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan will move up weights for Sunday’s second leg.
Barnes moves up from light-fly to flyweight to meet Samuel Kistohurry and Conlan moves up from flyweight to bantamweight to face Elias Friha. France’s Dylan Beccu, who Barnes stopped in the second round in Cork last evening, is also out injured.
Reflecting on last night’s result, Walsh said he was happy where his squad are at ahead of the European Championships, which begin in Minsk, Belarus on June 1st.
“I thought that 8-2 to Ireland would have been a fairer result last night to tell the truth. Overall, I was happy with the performances of the team in Cork”, he said.
Sunday’s second leg will now be decided over eight bouts. Boxing begins at 2pm at the National Stadium. Tickets are available on the door.

KENNETH EGAN is backing his former rival Joe Ward against Abdelkader Bouhenia of France in Cork and Dublin on Friday and Sunday.
Ireland meet the French at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Friday night (7.30pm) and at Dublin’s National Stadium on Sunday (2pm).
Bouhenia shocked Egan in the quarter-finals of the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan and in the semi-finals of the 2010 European Championships at the Ice Palace in Moscow.
“Performance on the day is what it is all about. I spoke to Joe recently and he looks trim and fit, all the squad do. They all look in great shape and focussed.
“The European Championships are just around the corner and the French internationals are ideal in regard to competitive action. The thing is to get in there and get the win and avoid any injuries ahead of the Europeans.
“I boxed the French lad twice and he beat me twice, but I beat myself to be honest. I was still on the wave of the Olympic silver medal in Milan and I wasn’t at the races. I should have beaten him in Moscow, but that’s the way it is. He won both fights and fair play to him.”
“As I said, the French lad is big and he’s strong, but Joe is well capable of beating him in Cork and Dublin.”
Egan announced he was hanging up is gloves and retiring after he was beaten by Ward in the 2013 Elite Irish light-heavyweight final at the National Stadium. It’s a decision he stands by.
“No regrets. I’m happy with that decision,” added the only Irish boxer in the 102-year history of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association to win 10 Irish Elites titles in-a-row.
