Catch a Herring – Reigning world champion welcomes Carl Frampton link

Carl Frampton [26(15)-2(0)] could be handed somewhat of a world title life line by Jamel Herring [20(10)-2(1)].

The WBO super featherweight champion has welcomed the idea of a fight between the pair.

The 33-year-old New Yorker wasn’t on ‘The Jakal’ radar up and until a few weeks ago, but now looks a serious world title option for the Belfast fighter.

Prior to suffering the freak hand injury that ruled him out of last Saturday’s Philadelphia hosted  clash with Emmanuel Dominguez, Bob Arum had suggested the quickest way for the 32-year-old to regain world champion status would be to move up in weight.

A fight with featherweight WBO world champ Oscar Valdez had been promised for December, but the Mexican has elected to move up in weight, a move that opens the door for another Top Rank fighter Shakur Stevenson to challenge for the vacated strap.

Arum then suggested Frampton and Stevenson should be kept apart and that the former two weight world champ should pursue his options at super feather.

‘Semper Fi’ Herring, who became a world champion thanks to victory over Masayuki Ito in May, was one of the names the promoter, who also works with Ryan Burnett and Michael Conlan, mentioned.

Frampton followed suit when speaking to ESPN recently suggesting he was au fait with Arum’s plan.

“Bob Arum has said that the fastest route for me to win a world title is to move to super featherweight. And a fight with Jamel Herring is something that appeals to me too, another WBO champion,” said ‘The Jackal’.

The champion himself is on board and has more than welcomed the link.

Herring does suggest he may have a first defense to take care of before opening talks, but seems open to a high profile bout with one of Ireland’s best ever pros.

Upon hearing his name mentioned by Frampton he tweeted the following:
