Carol Coughlan picks up Irish title during Black Friday sales

The National Senior (Intermediate) finals got off to an odd start on Friday night.

As is customary, the night starts with the lowest weight and then moves up, however the women’s light flyweight (48kg) final between Canal’s Chloe Fleck and Monkstown’s Carol Coughlan had to be postponed until later in the night.

Fleck stood ready to go at 7:00pm, but there was no sign of Coughlan as her name was repeatedly called over the tannoy.

Eventually the Monkstown fighter would arrive and the refixed fight would take place having been moved to fifth on the running order. It was worth the wait however, as Coughlan showed an exciting seek-and-destroy style to get inside Fleck’s long reach and earn a unanimous decision win.

Coughlan spoke to Irish-Boxing.com afterwards, and when asked about the delay she laughed at how she got caught in Dublin city centre during the manic ‘Black Friday’ sales, forcing her to miss her opening slot at the National Stadium.

In terms of the fight itself, Coughlan described how “it was good, well the first two rounds were good, then it started to get harder as it went on – but it was good to just get in there and do it.”

A relative newcome to the sport, the cheerful Coughlan explained that “I’m an accountant, so boxing is good for a bit of de-stressing!”

While she may not be boxing too long, there is definite potential, and a crack at the Senior Elites in February is not out of the question, and Coughlan reasoned “sure we’ll see what way Christmas goes, but it will be something to look forward to.”
